A mermaid is a mythical creature with body of half-woman and half-fish. Mermaids appear in the ancient stories of many cultures worldwide, including the Europe, Asia and Africa. The ancient greek poet Homer wrote about mermaids in the Odyssey.
Many people around the world have claimed existence of mermaids. In the ancient history mermaids were known as wives of powerful sea-dragons. Stories of mermaids are famous in many folklore like Near East, Ancient Greece, One Thousand and One Nights, British Isles, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China and Hinduism and Africa.
Mermaids also well known creature in hinduism. Suvannamaccha the golden daughter of tosakanth (Ravana) that appears in the Thai and other south-east Asian versions of the Ramayana.
